There are a few items that you would never travel wthout like your mobile phone, house keys, car, etc. But your wallet is arguably the most important as it holds your identification, cash and more importantly cards that allow you to access day to day life.
Here are some cards that we highly recommend every student in Auckland add to their wallet.
1. Bank Cards
Bank cards can offer more peace of mind. It’s not only more efficient, but also means you don’t have to carry or hold a large amount of cash.
In New Zealand, the most common banks are ASB, ANZ, BNZ, Kiwibank and Westpac. There are a few others as well but it is always good to choose one that has ATM’s that can be found easily when you need to withdraw cash.

2. AT (Auckland Transport) HOP Card
It’s a very good idea to have an AT Hop card in your wallet even if you stay on campus. A Hop card is more efficient than paying by cash as you can just swipe it on the HOP sensor as you enter the bus. It also gives a significant discount over cash fares for all distances. It can also be used on any mode of Auckland Public Transport like ferries, trains and buses. Even using the card once or twice a month for a trip to Waiheke or across to Takapuna beach will give you a discount.
If you use public transport on a daily basis then you could also apply a tertiary concession which provides even cheaper fares, and apply this to a monthy pass for super discounted rates. Just make sure you can show a valid student I.D. with a tertiary I.D. sticker. You can ask about these at EDENZ Colleges reception, apply online or visit the nearest AT customer service centre.
