Hi, my name is Emily Harland, I am 22 years old and in November 2017 I attended EDENZ Colleges.
I completed the 5 week intensive Trinity and NZQA course. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone who is 100% willing to put their social life on hold for 5 short weeks – it is definitely worth it.
Having the opportunity to have real life teaching experience in a classroom environment was such a privilege and I wouldn’t have been able to do this at such an early stage of teaching without EDENZ. Prior to beginning the course I emailed Anna Howard the NZ Marketing Manager for EDENZ whom was extremely helpful with everything from fees to course information to personal advice and encouragement throughout the entirety of the course.
The teachers were so knowledgable, helpful and organised
Mike Currie, the head of the TESOL department was one of the two teachers we had during the course, Mike was so knowledgable, helpful and organised. He has such an extensive knowledge on both English grammar and teaching. Mike has a lot of background in teaching in many different countries with both adults and children, he was able to share with us different experiences he had throughout his years teaching English as a second language. Mike is enthusiastic and made a course that was incredibly intense both fun and enjoyable.
Then of course there was Fiona O’Sullivan who is perhaps the funniest, bubbliest person I have ever met. I have never before had a teacher that had such an imaginative, unique way of teaching. Fiona made the course seem doable and at times where I thought I wasn’t able to complete an assignment on time, Fiona would give words of encouragement and had such a laid back approach that it made my stress seem irrelevant and unnecessary.
The workload was high but worth it and I made friends from around the world
The staff definitely made the course as amazing as it was. The work load is full on and incredibly ‘intensive’ – hence the name of the course but the certificate you receive after all the hard work you put in is worth the late night studying and assignment cramming. You will meet friends from all over the world, people you wouldn’t usually associate with on a day to day basis become your close friends and I wouldn’t have met some of the most interesting people I have ever met if I didn’t sign up to the course.
Job Prospects? I got TWO offers!
After not even one month having completed the 5 week intensive course, I received a job offer at an international school on the Gold Coast in Australia. The school is owned and operated by ‘ESL’, a globally recognised language company. Here I will be teaching kids ages 7-13. The school is designed for school holiday programmes where international students come to the Gold Coast for summer camps. The students are mainly Chinese but some Japanese and Korean students sign up to the holiday programme. The requirements for this job was a certificate in TESOL so without this, I wouldn’t have been successful in receiving the role. I was also offered at job for ‘The Peppy Kids Club’ in Japan, this is the second biggest language school in Japan.
With having a TESOL certificate, the opportunities are endless, I am able to travel the world doing what I love and EDENZ is located in a convenient, central location that is accessible via public transport from all areas of Auckland.
I highly recommend signing up for either the 5 or 10 week course at EDENZ Colleges. I can assure you it will be worth it.
