New Zealand Certificate in Language Teaching (NZCLT) is approved by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). It is more suitable to non-native speakers. Trinity Certificate in TESOL and NZCLT both share most of the input lessons, but the Assignment requirements are different.
OVERVIEW OF COURSE
6 core assessments make up the NZCLT, and are offered over 10 to 15 weeks depending on chosen course intensity.
The most important feature of the course is the emphasis on the development of specialist teaching skills through practice with classes of multi-lingual students. This will be as varied as possible so that on leaving the course you will be able to inform employers that you have taught adults of different nationalities.
TEACHING PRACTICE LOG
You will need to organise your lessons, self evaluations, trainers’ feedback, materials and observations professionally in a red folder.
At the beginning of the course, you will have three lessons in an unknown language. Your language tutor will use the methodology that you will be expected to use in your English classes. You will record your reactions to the teaching and learning on a daily basis and then consider the implications derived from your learning for teaching complete beginners. The purpose of this is also to put you in the position of a beginner in a new language, without the use of translation.
TEACHING MATERIALS ASSIGNMENT
You will be required to create a set of materials for use in one of your lessons, and evaluate them, explaining why you chose the format, and how you would adapt these for other teaching scenarios.
LANGUAGE AWARENESS TESTS
You will be tested on the grammar, lexis and pronunciation that is taught on the course. The knowledge you will need is based on your ability to analyse the English you already use in everyday communication.
